In renaissance Florence, the rival Medicis and Pazzi were the wealthiest and most powerful families in the land.
In 1478, the Pazzi family tried to assassinate Guilano d'Medici after a feast in the village of Gallina. Once the Medici family members fell asleep, a team of assassins planned to sneak into the town to kill them.
However, when the assassins encountered a yard full of chickens, the birds erupted into a cackling frenzy, alerting the party and thereby saving the life of Giuliano.
The next day, Giuliano d'Medici ordered his artisans to honor the roosters by creating ceramic rooster pitchers. The grateful Medici sent each family in Gallina a ceramic rooster as a symbol of good luck, protection, and prosperity.
